In the 1960's, DB needed new electric locomotives which could adapt
to both German electric system (15kV, 16-2/3Hz) and French electric system
(25kV, 50Hz). At first, 4 locomotives of class 181.1 were built on a trial
basis. In 1974 and 1975, 25 locomotives of class 181.2 were built. Class
181.2 was based on class 181.2, but many improvements were made. The length of class 181.2 is 17,940mm, power output 3,200kW, max speed 160km, and wheel arrangement Bo-Bo. When produced, the livery of class 181.2 was blue/beige or blue, and recently some are painted in new red colour. 4 locomotives were named. No.211 was named "Lurraine", No.212 "Luxembourg", No.213 "Saar", and No.214 "Mosel". Class 181.2 is now operated for all types of passenger trains and freight trains between Germany and France or Germany and Luxembourg. |
