To replace steam locomotives of BR50 and BR44, the mass-production
of a new class of electric locomotives was started in 1956. That was class
140. Until 1973, 848 locomotives were built. The number is the biggest
of all classes of Bundesbahn`s electric locomotives. Class 140 is much in common with class 110.1, and only gear rate and brake system are different. And unlike class 110.1, all locos of class 140 has same looking. At first the livery of class 140 is green/black. And later some were painted in blue/beige, othres in "Orientrot", and others in "Verkehrsrot" with 'DB Cargo' logos. For ore friegt trains, three locos (140 776/777/793) have special equipments and can be operated being coupled between freight wagons. Class 140 is still used for suburban traffic and freight traffic. Locos of this class will be replaced by class 145. The length of class 140 is 16,400mm, weight 83t, wheel arrangement Bo-Bo, power output 3,700kW, traction poiwer 275kN, and maxium speed 110km/h. |

Since class 140 wasn`t suit to gradient lines, new locomotives of class 139 were built. There isn`t much difference between class 139 and class 140, or between class 139 and class 110.1. Unlike class 140, class 139 has power generation brake system (Class 110.1 has this brake, too.). In the 1990s, 18 surplus locos of class 110.1 were altered, and became members of class 139. And only class 139 134 were altered and became class 110 511. At first the livery of class 139 was green/black, and later many of them were repainted to "orientrot". (Probably some had blue/beige livery in the 1970s and 1980s.) All locomotives of class 139 belongs to DB Cargo. They are assigned at BW (Depot) München West and are used for freight trains or suburban traffic. Recently some of them have "Verkehrsrot" livery with `DB Cargo` logos. Especially class 139 552 was a first loco which had `DB Cargo` livery. As class 140, probably class 139 will be replaced by new class 145. The length of class 139 is 16,490mm, Weight 83t, wheel arrangement Bo-Bo, power output 3,700kW, traction power 275kN, and maximum speed 110km/h. |
