In about 1970, DB needed new electric locomotives for passenger trains.
From 1974 to 1984, 227 locomotives of class 111 were built by Krauss-Maffei,
Henschel, Krupp, Siemens, AEG, and BBC. The plan of class 111 was based on those of class 110/112, and class 139/140. But many improvements were made on the motorman`s room according to human engineering. The length of class 111 is 16,570mm, weight 83t, power output 3,620kW, max speed 160km/h, and the wheel arangement Bo-Bo. Locomotives from class 111 111-1 to class 111 188-9 had S-Bahn livery and operated for suburban traffic in Rhein-Ruhr area. The livery of the others was blue/beige. And recently some locomotives had new red livery. The locomotive of class 111 049-3 was operated for `Lufthansa Airport Express` between Frankfurt and Stuttgart, and had special livery. In 1991 the construction of the NBS was between Mannheim and Stuttgart was finished, class 103 started to be operated for this train instead of 111 049-3, and the livery of it was changed to normal one. Class 111 is now operated for not only local trains but also express trains. |
